Rietveld Red and Blue Armchair
The designer Rietveld played with volume and rectilinear figures, analyzing the interaction of vertical and horizontal planes, just as he did with his architecture. Despite the fact that this armchair was designed in 1918, the color scheme (red, yellow and blue) along with black, associated with Piet Mondrian, was only applied in 1923. Rietveld focused on the simplicity of the chair's construction, hoping that in the future , it should be mass produced, not manufactured. The pieces of wood from which the chair was made were the standard measure in which lumber was found at that time.
Rietveld believes that the architecture of the future must be based on something more than physical comfort: the well-being of the spirit. He and his colleagues from the de Stijl artistic current sought to create a utopia based on the harmony between people that they considered necessary for the reconstruction of Europe after the tumult of the First World War.
