Calvet Collection - timeless elegance by Antoni Gaudí
Antoni Gaudí paid attention to all decorative aspects of his projects, including furniture. BD Barcelona understood the interest of contemporary designers in Gaudí's furniture and was the first company to rescue these historic crafts, creating a series of handmade reproductions using the same materials (solid lacquered oak), with a wide variety of details used to produce the original pieces.
BD Barcelona’s Calvet furniture collection is a limited series designed by Spanish architect and designer Antoni Gaudí. The collection takes its name from the Calvet house, a building in Barcelona designed by Gaudí at the beginning of the 20th century. Each piece is carefully crafted and numbered to preserve its exclusivity and unique value, meticulously manufactured by skillful craftsmen, paying homage to Gaudí's emphasis on craftsmanship and details.
During our time, the Calvet furniture ensemble was created as a tribute to Gaudí's architectural genius and his innovative approach, combining organic forms, natural motifs and revolutionary construction techniques. BD Barcelona, the Spanish design brand, collaborated with Gaudí's family and Barcelona City Hall to bring the architect's original designs to life and produce the collection. This includes various pieces of furniture - chairs, tables, cabinets and mirrors -, embodying Gaudí's distinctive style. The furniture is characterised by flowing lines, sinuous shapes and intricate details inspired by nature. Gaudí's fascination with organic elements and his ability to integrate them into his designs is clearly reflected in every detail.
The materials used vary from solid wood, such as oak and walnut, to metal accents, glass and upholstery. The craftsmanship and detailing of the highest standard reflect Gaudí's commitment to excellence in architecture and design.
One of the standout pieces of this collection is the Calvet chair, with a unique, dynamic shape reminiscent of vegetal patterns. The chair's backrest and legs intertwine in an elegant and organic flow, creating an ergonomic yet visually spectacular form. Another remarkable piece is the mirror, which highlights Gaudí's tendency to incorporate decorative elements into functional objects. The frame of the mirror is adorned with intricate carvings and natural motifs.
Calvet furniture is not only a tribute to Gaudí's artistic vision, but also a proof of the lasting influence of his work, giving us the opportunity to bring a part of his genius into our own homes and experience the beauty and innovation that defined his contribution to architecture and design. Though designed more than a century ago, Calvet's furniture pieces are characterized by an utterly distinctive, timeless style that transcends fashion trends. The unique aesthetic and artistic value still resonates with design enthusiasts and collectors today. The style that became an Art Nouveau icon is preferred for projects with varied functionalities, such as residential interiors, hospitality and hotels, art galleries and museums, corporate and office spaces, showrooms and design exhibitions.
Barcelona Edition Hotel and Generali offices in Barcelona are amongst the most representative projects in which Calvet furniture was integrated. Also, leading auction houses often trade pieces of the collection for their artistic value and unique, timeless design.
